Already during the U18 World Championship round in 2012, large runoffs allowed some competitors to go off the track without consequences in some places, or cut corners in others. During free practice for the World Championship in 2013, they were attempting to lap faster by shortening the length of the circuit by going beyond the regulatory white lines.
The briefing on Thursday afternoon made things clear by reminding the drivers of the rule about having more than two wheels off the track, when a penalty can be given. Cameras and judges of fact will therefore watch the two main areas where cutting the track could bring significant gains.
