Hostilities began at Portimao with the prefinal for KZ2, for this first round of the WSK World Series. While it was very hot, drivers were getting ready on the starting grid, Rick Dreezen (Tony Kart / Vortex) and Gary Carlton (CRG / Maxter) in the front row. Jonathan Thonon (CRG / Maxter) in 6th position would be one of the pilots to monitor, as Beitske Visser was (Intrepid / TM) in 14th.
Dreezen had a successful start, Carlton managed to take up 2nd position ahead of Marco Ardigo while Thonon was already 4th. Roberto Toninelli (Lenzo / LKE) was a victim of a collision on the line. From the second round, Carlton took the lead and Thonon joined him in second position. Ardigo was in third in front of Dreezen and Negro (DR / Parilla), Visser was already in 10th place, ahead of Gianni Gazurelli (FA Kart / Vortex). Both CRG drivers pulled away, with Thonon approaching Carlton. The positions were stable, but Carlton held the lead over his teammate. Dreezen, in 4th, did not give in to Ardigo.
From the 10th of the 13 laps of the race, Thonon seemed closer to Carlton and Ardigo took Dreezen. Carlton defended, but on the last lap, Thonon attacked the American to settle take the lead. The order was the two CRGs Thonon and Carlton, then Ardigo 3rd, Dreezen 4th, Negro 5th.
