The sun came out on the track Rio hotel for the first qualifying heat for KZ2. Gary Carlton (CRG / Maxter) made an excellent start and held the lead from the first corner. Simo Puhakka (PCR / TM) was still clinging to his second position ahead of Rick Dreezen (Tony Kart / Vortex), Marco Ardigo (Tony Kart / Vortex), Matt Jaskol (Intrepid / TM) and Anthony Abbasse. Tony Lavanant (Energy / TM) was in 7th position ahead of Beitske Visser (Intrepid / TM). Behind, a skirmish at the first hairpin eliminated Pierre Ragues.
While Carlton escapes insurmountably in the lead, the battle raged. Puhakka resisted Ardigo and Dreezen, then Abbasse passed Jaskol and Dreezen, Lavanant lost a little ground under the increasingly urgent threat of Visser. A moment from the bumper of Ardigo, Abbasse slowed down the pace and Dreezen passed while Ardigo finally found the opening on Puhakka. Visser finally attacked Lavanant to gain 7th place.
Ardigo returned to Carlton at the end of the race, but he easily won. Puhakka retained third place from Dreezen, Abbasse finished 6th behind Jaskol following a penalty. Beitske Visser set the fastest time.
