The spectacles in the Repechages have been extraordinary in the Rotax World Finals. Nobody wanted to risk pushing too hard at the front, while the chasing pack continued to push to finish in the top 6, so we’ve seen countless twists. This was to the delight of the full stands at La Conca who screamed their joy and excitement in an atmosphere worthy of a great football game.
The surprises were many, for example in Rotax Junior with the elimination of British driver Matthew Parry, 2nd last year. The French driver Jules Afonso didn’t get through either, admittedly handicapped by nine pounds on the scales and lower experience than most of his rivals. Guilherme Gouveia (Portugal), Lucas Pace (Malta), Jordi Van Moorsel (Netherlands), Victor Bouveng (Sweden), Andrew Palmer (USA) and Mochnacki Bartlomiej (Poland) are the six qualified drivers.
In another major turn of events, the Dutch Rotax Max Van Joey Splunteren, the winner of the Rotax Euro Challenge 2010, didn’t get through either! Not very efficient this year, the Belgian Christophe Adams could not do anything, but it must be said that this “Master” ran with the “Youth” in times. Christophe Boisclair (Canada), John Friberg (Sweden), Stepanova Nekeel (USA) Morten Nomme (Finland), Troy Bretherton (Australia) and Andrew Tang (Singapore) won their ticket to the final phase.
In Rotax DD2, Gino Tengger (Switzerland), Raivo Luhse (Latvia), Cory Luciano (Canada) and Gnoevoy Vladimir (Russia) finished grouped in less than a second. Thailand’s James Grunwell and South African Mark Murray also saved their skin, barely. Michael Rossi, who came from afar (New Caledonia), was also present. His weekend was finished with a 22nd place in the repechage.
