It was a superb pre-final for those over 32 with leaders who continued to play cat and mouse. Initially, the Dutchman Dennis Kroes kept the advantage, but soon found himself under threat from the Canadian Scott Campbell, who took pole position on Thursday and started in 4th.
Campbell went on the attack and took the lead, but Kroes slipped through in the last corner and took it with panache. The Swede Martin Victorsson ensured an ideal third place for the start of the finals, while the chasing pack also offered a fine spectacle, not far behind the leaders.
Several passes occurred between American Jim Busby, Briton David Griffith, the Hungarian Gerry Hargitai and Stoyan Gosevits of Greece. They finished in that order, a few lengths ahead of Frenchman Stephane Picque, who was one or two tenths too far off to join in the fight. There was disappointment for his compatriot William Berteaux, victim of a collision on the first lap when he was looking good.
