The weather is now beautiful on Sunday morning at Wackersdorf and the track is completely dry. The Kartcom editor abandoned the press room to write directly from the edge of the track on a stack of tires. The KF1 drivers went out for the warm-up on their second day of the World Championship.
Nyck De Vries was in no hurry to take the stage, starting just before Matteo Vigano. Mikko Pakari went ahead of Vigano and Roussel but they had De Vries in their wheel tracks. Nyck started to put the pressure on, he was now in 1st position, with 50”244. Roussel replied with 50”220.
After a short pit stop, De Vries was back even faster, going below 50” and set successive fastest laps. Guillaume De Ridder, then Remy Deguffroy, joined in the fight. Sébastien Bailly joined the party in 2nd place which is when we really started to get into the rhythm of the session. The Eastern European drivers were prominent, Libor Toman was 2nd fastest, Karol Basz in the top 5, and Zdenek Groman next to take 2nd position. 11 drivers were under 50.”
The session ended with De Vries further improving his fastest time, 49”437, 17/100 ahead of Groman, Toman, Bailly and D’Agosto, the first Southern European driver. Anthoine Hubert finished 13th, 14th was Roussel. Alexander Albon had only done 7 laps and obviously things were not working well. Teammate Jordan Chamberlain set a 12th fastest lap 4 tenths behind the leader. It remains to be determined whether a warm-up can give good guidance for the conduct of the competition to come …
