CRG drivers did not have the chance to perform as brilliantly as they could have legitimately hoped for at the European KZ1 Championship at Wackersdorf. A circuit not much suitable for races involving these powerful karts, several crashes and problematic tyres broke the momentum of the Men in Black, who had dominated the category in other meetings. It was with the KZ2 European title won by Fabian Federer and Mirko Torsellini’s third place that CRG recovered the lost ground in a category where its chassis have always been largely represented.
Almost 25% of all KZ2 entrants raced on CRG chassis at the European KZ2 Championship, an excellent token of appreciation by drivers from all over Europe. It was first of all Francesco Celenta who brought CRG colours in the spotlight with his pole position in timed qualifying and his two heat victories. Then came Mirko Torsellini’s turn, with as many as 5 victories in the qualifying heats. Fabian Federer contributed with a second place in pre-final before winning the final race, and Torsellini completed CRG’s success with a recovery from 7th to 3rd place and the fastest lap time in the race.
Jonathan Thonon got off on the right foot for a great result in KZ1 on one of the most competitive CRG/Maxter karts, with his pole position in timed qualifying, a heat victory and the fastest lap time in the pre-final race, but was betrayed by defective tyres in the final race. It was Davide Forè who came out better by concluding with a 5th place, while further back Arnaud Kozlinski set the fastest lap time in the final race. The Euro KZ1 2011 has left a bitter taste to CRG Racing Team, which however is already looking forward to showing all its speed at next September’s World Cup.
