KZ1 drivers often have stormy relations with their tyres. Anthony Abbasse paid a high price for it at Zuera, during the last round of the WSK Euro Series. It must be said that temperatures were high in Spain, in early August, though that did not prevent the Sodi/Maxter driven by the Frenchman from setting some stunning times, but it raised concerns about tyres in many teams. In timed qualifying, Abbasse was in the lead pack with the second fastest lap time and conquered a second place in the first heat. Undoubtedly Sodi chassis were up to expectations!
Then the tyre performance/reliability dilemma struck the French team. Indeed, a choice had to be made between the relatively high pressures recommended by the manufacturer, but counterproductive in terms of speed, and a higher risk of puncture due to air pressure suitable for a good performance. Abbasse, who was in an ideal position in Sunday’s qualifying top 5, was forced to retire with 3 laps to go in Final 2.
“It is a dangerous game and not a particularly interesting one“, Abbasse commented. “We had the level of performance needed to fight for leadership, but our tyres did not enable us to keep our position. It was quite annoying! I hope we will solve the problem before the Word Cup at Sarno...”
Paolo Besancenez was very satisfied with his Celesta chassis during a competition that was mostly a training opportunity with a view to the World Cup for KF3. “We immediately reached a satisfactory speed and we kept it throughout the heats” Paolo explained. “I was out of the final race owing to a collision at the start of the pre-final, but I am very confident about the World Cup: my chassis is at the top!“
