This question deserves to be asked at the end of the first day of racing at Portimao. The first lap of most qualifying heats contested Thursday, November 12th led to clashes, often involving many drivers. At least four rolls occurred at the end of the straight, the last requiring the race to be stopped for the ambulance to go on to the track.
The talk from all sides in the paddock confirms this impression and the stock of spare parts (spoilers, steering columns, …) has reached a critical threshold. “At this rate, we can not provide the necessary parts up to the end of the meeting,” confided two of the main suppliers. Used parts accumulate in the pits like never before.
The responsibility for this unfortunate situation lies primarily with the drivers who pull the stunt too often, but the fact that sanctions were very rare plays a major role in these behaviours. This sporting leniency contrasts with the overall quite good quality of the Rotax organisation and the extreme rigour of the scrutineers who let nothing past, not even a missing nut, loose seat or a few too many spacers.
During the qualifying heats, too many drivers saw their chances of qualifying ruined by unsanctioned unsporting conduct. It is very unfortunate at such an event, but it is not too late to remedy the situation.
