Night fell rapidly on the Bahrain circuit at the end of Qualifying, and the first Qualifying Heats were held at night under powerful lighting. The races were extremely competitive and exciting to watch. The first lap sometimes caused problems on cold tyres and there were several spins or exits, generally in the middle of the field. The slow procedure was used on several occasions. The sand deposited on the track during these exits complicated the drivers’ task.
